The Diploma in Packaging Technology class on tour

The Diploma in Packaging Technology class on tour.
The world of packaging is evolving at a breakneck pace, with innovations that promise to revolutionise the way we preserve, protect, and present products. The students of the 2024/25 Diploma in Packaging Technology – run by The Irish Packaging Society, administered by Design Print & Packaging Skillnet and accredited by TUDublin – had the unique opportunity to witness these advancements firsthand during their recent visits to Smurfit Westrock and Abco Kovex.
At Smurfit Westrock, the students were greeted by the plant’s dedicated team, including Plant Manager Anthony Carroll, Process Manager Eleanor Trearty and Operations Manager Michael Cussen. They were immersed in the operational intricacies of one of the World’s leading packaging companies, gaining valuable insights into Secondary Packaging, and the processes involved in shelf-ready and outer box manufacture.

The next stop brought the students to Abco Kovex, where Managing Director Brian Fitzsimons and Sales Director Ireland Kevin Crothers showcased a blend of time-honoured techniques and cutting-edge technologies. This immersive experience provided the students with a comprehensive understanding of Transport Packaging, materials, techniques and packaging solutions, from sustainable practices to innovative design.

These visits are more than just educational tours; they are a testament to the collaborative spirit of the packaging community and its commitment to nurturing the next generation of professionals towards a more innovative and sustainable future.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the hosts and guides who made these tours possible, offering a platform for growth and discovery.
